The BMW S14 was based on the BMW M10 engine block and the cylinder head of the BMW S38 six-cylinder engine, with two cylinders removed. It was designed specifically for sporty performance and was used in both road and racing applications.

The 2.3-liter BMW S14 inline-four features dual overhead camshafts, an aluminum cylinder head, and a cast-iron block. Factory-rated output was 192 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. The seller notes approximately 194k miles were on the engine when it was removed from the M3 in November 2021.
